Neve Bowen is under the “Deep Blue Ocean”

A blend of New Wave and Americana suits a song about anxiety

London-based 19-year-old Neve Bowen has released the 2nd single, “Deep Blue Ocean” from her upcoming EP.  The EP titled, “Lifeline,” discusses mental health challenges in a raw and honest way. Neve tackles the topic of anxiety with “Deep Blue Ocean.” Musically, the blend of New Wave and Americana plays a major part in the feeling of the song. She has a signature sound that can only be described as atmospheric. The dimension and texture of her vocals remind me a lot of Florence + The Machine.

Lyrics that move you

“I can’t swim away cus,
the waves they drag me under,
and the sky goes black,
to the sound of rolling thunder.”

The lyrics capture the feeling of anxiety to a tee. As a person who has lived with this mental health issue for most of her life, I was shocked when I heard these lyrics. I immediately said, “YES! That is exactly how it feels!”

Neve BowenNeve Bowen was influenced by legends

Neve is a massive fan of some of the all-time greatest albums. “Rumours” by Fleetwood Mac, “Ziggy Stardust” by David Bowie, and “Easter” by Patti Smith are some of her inspirations. She also mentions more current artists like Phoebe Bridgers and Lana Del Rey. When artists around the same age as Neve have inspirations that were around before they were thought of, you know they have a musical heart.

Here is what we at Ear Worms suggest: First, go listen to “Deep Blue Ocean” because it is great. Second, take a page out of Neve’s book and listen to the albums listed above. And finally, make sure to follow Neve Bowen and keep an eye out. This talented musician is someone you won’t want to miss out on.
