Spice Girls “Who Do You Think You Are” / “Mama” Celebrate 26th Anniversary

On this day in 1997, the Spice Girls released “Who Do You Think You Are” and “Mama” and… yes.

“Your trumpets blowing for far too long”
– Victoria Beckham

We love a good blast from the past and there is likely nobody on this planet that hasn’t bopped along to the sounds of “Wannabe” or “Spice Up Your Life” during their life time.

(It should be noted at times founding member Victoria Beckham couldn’t be bothered)
Originally released on March 03, 1997 via Virgin Records, “Who Do You Think You Are” “Mama” were released as a double a-side single (something we rarely see anymore) and would be the final release from their debut album “Spice“. Meanwhile, in North America buzz for the girls was starting to fire up having just received “Wannabe” in January. “Who Do You Think You Are” and “Mama” were not formally released as singles in America, and thus often forgotten in the States (although the single releases have snuck their way onto streaming).

“Who Do You Think You Are” and “Mama” served as the 1997 charity single for Comic Relief and peaked at #1 on the UK singles chart, becoming the fourth consecutive number one in the United Kingdom. “Who Do You Think You Are” is notably one of their more upbeat songs and most certainly invokes a certain hip thrust from the deepest parts of my soul.

Revisit the magic that is “Who Do You Think You Are” and “Mama” and keep those fingers crossed for a proper (final) reunion tour.

Oh….. and Spice up your life (because why not??)
